Prior to the birth of the London Underground, the capital was a sea of horse-drawn carts, pedestrians and animals. Getting around the city was slow and frustrating and a quicker solution was needed to encourage growth and make the lives of residents that much easier.

Sam Mullins, director of the London Transport Museum, said: "The Metropolitan Railway was a conventional steam-powered railway that was just built underground.

"Essentially, we’re looking at a railway to join up the termini of the main line railways which had all arrived in London in the 1830s and 40s, and were for the most part around the edge of the city.

"Initially the idea was to build a railway that joined up Paddington and Euston and King’s Cross."

But 150 years on the London Underground now spans 11 different lines, serving 270 different stations with an approximate total of 3.66 million weekday users!

The South Hall will be overrun by all things nautical with exhibitors also making use of the marina to showcase their beautiful masterpieces. If you’re a boat lover there is only one place to be.

The Tullett Prebon London Boat Show 2013 will consist of sailboats, powerboats, canoes, sailing yachts, RIBs, dinghies and motor boats, taking up 40% of the total of the exhibition. The remainder will be exhibits that include accessories, equipment, engines, and services.

Three interactive pools will also be present at the show allowing visitors to test their marine knowledge. One pool will allow visitors to take control of on-water model racing yachts, another will host the 'make & create' activity where children can have a go building a watercraft and then testing it on the water, and the last one will have visitors  canoeing and kayaking.

Travelling to the Wimbledon Championships couldn’t be easier whether you’re travelling in the car, catching a bus or getting the tube or train to the courts. Below you’ll find all the information that’s required to book a car park space, organise prices for the Park and Ride and discover what tube station to get off at.

Tube

There are three tube stations close by, Wimbledon (District Line), Wimbledon Park (District Line) and Southfields (District Line).

Overground

The closest train station is Wimbledon, but it’s still quite a distance away from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. It’s advisable to catch a bus or similar transport from the station.

Bus

The buses available that will take you to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club include numbers 493, 39 and 639.

Park and Ride

The Park and Ride is available between 6.30am-11pm at Morden Park, which can be accessed from the A3 at Tolworth and via the A240 and A24. The last public bus from the AELTC to the Park and Ride is at 10pm (unless the Centre Court has a late play) leaving from Somerset Road.

When seeing the hockey and Paralympic football events at the Riverbank Arena you are in the midst of all the excitement surrounding the London Olympic Games. Situated in the Olympic Park, travelling to your destination couldn’t be easier. However, we do urge you to plan your journey in advance and be aware of any last minute changes.

Tube

If your transport of choice is the London tube service, the closest stations to the Olympic Park are Stratford (Central and Jubilee Lines) or Leyton (Central Line).

Overground

If you’ll be travelling into London using the overground the station you will need to get to is Stratford Rail Station or Maryland Rail Station. 

Buses

The bus services in London are unparallel to the rest of the country. To get to the Olympic Park hop on to the number 339 bus from Stratford City Bus Station to Shadwell Station or number 25 from Oxford Circus to Hainault Street.

About the Riverbank Arena

In October 2011 the first Riverbank Arena pitch was revealed and at the beginning of this year the surrounding structures were erected just in time for the first hockey test match. The Riverbank Arena boasts two pitches, one which is intended to be used as a warm up area and the other for us, the spectators. The hockey pitches are located between the Press Centre and the River Lea, with the main pitch holding an impressive capacity of 16,000.

Once the Games are complete and the worthy athletes are presented with their medals, the Riverbank Arena pitch will be relocated to the north of the Olympic Park at Eton Manor where a group of permanent sporting facilities will be located.
