Wimbeldon 2009With no major football tournament this summer and Englands aspirations of winning the ICC 20 20 cricket tournament dashed by the West Indies yesterday, this paves the way for the most famous Tennis tounament in the world to take centre stage once more, Wimbeldon.
Wimbledon is widley regarded as the most prestigous tennis tournament out of the four major honours available, and here in the UK we love nothing more than basking in the sun, drinking champagne and eating strawberries whilst watching the best male and female tennis stars battle it out.
The British weather will also prove a tough battle also as players and spectators brace themselves for frustrating interuptions of rain which is now considered a standard eventuality. So if you are going to Wimbeldon this year it is advisable to add an umbrella to the list of things to bring as well as sun cream which is a contradiciton in itself.
With qualifying now taking place, the tournament is scheduled to run from the 22nd of June till the 5th of July where the mens final takes place and the womens final a day earlier on the 4th of July. Current mens champion Rafael Nadal and current womens champion Venus Williams will be hoping to defend their titles against the other 128 players registered players.
Last years mens final between Rodger Federer and Rafael Nadal was described as the best tennis final ever and the longest also lasting an epic 4 hours and 48 minutes. These two players have been dominating the mens tennis scene recently, however Wimbledon is far from predictable as the wild card system has proved to unearth the most unlikely of winners including Goran Ivanišević who won the tournament ranked 125th, and Boris Becker who won Wimbledon aged only 17 both tournament records that stand today.
With Andy Murray winning Queens we are sure to see previously named Henman hill now Murray mound buzzing with optamistic Brits hoping for a shock victory, so if you want to experience the thrills and spills, the close calls, the winning shots, the dejected losers and the euphoric winners then get down to the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon.
